Relaxation Station

Assignment

3 stars

I chose Emotional Lyrics from the Writing Assignments section for my first week 3 assignment. It really grabbed me because I’ve been listening to music a lot during the pandemic and already have my playlists sorted by emotion!

Behind the Work

I immediately went to my apple music playlists and chose “A-R-I-E-L“: a playlist I created of all my favorite or go-to songs. The rest of my playlists were created based on what emotion they make me feel: “Hype.“, “Sad.“, “Happy.“, “spicy N sweet“, “Sweaty.“, and “Nostalgic.“. Relaxation is a big part of my life, as I am an unnaturally lazy person. So without hesitation, I chose to find the 3 songs that make me feel relaxed.

Here are the 3 I chose:

anemome by slenderbodies
Sleep on the Floor by The Lumineers
From the Dining Table by Harry Styles

Down below
My thoughts can wander and I let go
I don’t need much in my life I know
I like it better underwater

I’ve been drowning in anemone
Here you’ll never get the best of me
I’ve been drowning in anemone
Breathing deep
Breathing deep

Down below, sandy like the ocean floor
Quiet like I like it here, I’ll never be alone

I pause my life, I spend my time
It’s always right, it’s never wrong to try
It’s been alright, I’ve been alright
But here it’s better, I hear better
I like it better underwater
Send me underwater

Feeling little pulls
Won’t get the best of me so
La la la let’s go
A little destiny
To tell you what you know
A fatal recipe of life

Dreaming ’bout a place
Where I can be by myself

Feeling little pulls
Won’t get the best of me so
La la la let’s go
A little destiny
To tell you what you know
A fatal recipe of life

Dreaming ’bout a place where I can be by myself
Dreaming ’bout a place where I can be by myself

anemome – slenderbodies

Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
‘Cause if we don’t leave this town
We might never make it out
I was not born to drown
Baby come on

Forget what Father Brennan said
We were not born in sin
Leave a note on your bed
Let your mother know you’re safe
And by the time she wakes
We’ll have driven through the state
We’ll have driven through the night
Baby come on

If the sun don’t shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave
Or will you rail against your dying day

And when we looked outside
Couldn’t even see the sky
How do you pay the rent
Is it your parents
Or is hard work dear
Holding the atmosphere
I don’t wanna live like that, yeah

If the sun don’t shine on me today
If the subways flood and bridges break

Jesus Christ can’t save me tonight
Put on your dress, yes wear something nice
Decide on me, yea decide on us
Oh, oh, oh, Illinois, Illinois

Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
‘Cause if we don’t leave this town
We might never make it out

Sleep on the Floor – The Lumineers

Woke up alone in this hotel room
Played with myself, where were you?
Fell back to sleep, I got drunk by noon
I’ve never felt less cool

We haven’t spoke since you went away
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever be the first one to break?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way

I saw your friend that you know from work
He said you feel just fine
I see you gave him my old t-shirt
More of what was once mine

I see it’s written, it’s all over his face
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever say what you want to say?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way

Maybe one day you’ll call me and tell me that you’re sorry too
Maybe one day you’ll call me and tell me that you’re sorry too
Maybe one day you’ll call me and tell me that you’re sorry too
But you, you never do

Woke up the girl who looked just like you
I almost said your name

We haven’t spoke since you went away
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever say what you want to say?
Even my phone misses your call
We haven’t spoke since you went away
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever say what you want to say?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way

From the Dining Table – Harry Styles

During the Work

To complete the assignment I found all of the music videos/official audios on YouTube. I then embed each video in a tweet with the emotion it makes me feel and why. The way music makes me feel is more about the instruments than the lyrics, that’s why I chose Sleep on the Floor, anemone, and From the Dining Room. Each song is quite sad in and of itself, but is quite beautiful when you listen to the combination of instruments behind each voice.

OMG! Ever since COVID hit I’ve been making really specific emotion playlists (my favorite one is called Caramel Coffee and it’s songs that feel like a cup of caramel coffee and a warm hug after a long day)! I love that I’m not the only one putting way too much thought into my playlists hahaha! I just recently started getting into the Lumineers too!

I love the name of your playlist, I know that exact feeling! The Lumineers are my favorite band, I’ve been obsessed since middle school lol. I would love to share music sometime 🙂 I’m hoping once COVID-19 eventually ends I can go to one of their concerts.
