My Example of Audio Storytelling:
Summertime Magic by Childish Gambino/Donald Glover is, to me, perfect audio storytelling. I looked into the lyrics of the song, to help me better understand the story as a whole. Here is what Genius tells me the song is about: Childish Gambino expresses love for a girl who’s bright like the summer sunshine. Valentine’s Day is normally celebrated toward the end of winter, on February 14, but he wants to celebrate in the warm season.
The lyrics are pretty straightforward and quite repetitive, but mixed with the instruments and sound effects… it’s a beautiful auditory example of Summer. Glover uses sand noises, Caribbean steel drums, Jamaican mallets, and other sounds to create a bright, mid-day summertime feeling. The song overall is upbeat and fun, while also maintaining a good flow. In Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad: How Radio Creates Empathy, Abumrad mentions that audio can connect people by co-imagining through emotions and images. A strong emotion I feel when listening to Summertime Magic is happiness. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I associate happiness with summertime. That’s why I love this song so much, no matter the time, date, or season it always makes me feel how I do when it is summertime: worry-free and happy.
